The Hedwig film literally changed my life, so it was a dream come to true to produce it on stage with the creative freedom to put my own spin on it. Going in, I knew I wanted a minimal set, great costumes, and diverse, queer cast. Early on in the show, Hedwig is handed a broken mirror, which is normally a throw-away line but I thought it could also serve as great visual metaphor for how she actually sees herself; a person permanently broken by the people she loved most. So instead of a “one-woman” show, I split the role of Hedwig between three different actors to represent her identity at different stages in her life.
